In the book Imperfect Lives Perfect Grace, Dr. E.M. Johnson compellingly retells the age-old biblical stories of Leah and Tamar, encouraging readers to reconsider these stories in a captivating manner.

Leah, the lady who had been second best, stuck in the shadow of her sister, and finally given as a wife to a man who never wanted her, must live with the knowledge that her husband had no love for her. In a time where virginity and chastity were the totality of a woman's glory, Tamar has her virtue brutally snatched from her by her half-brother in what seems to be a series of consequences of their father's sins. With a lot of life experiences, the stories of these two women serve as a reminder and a comfort to people all over the world.

One thing I really appreciated about this book was that it concentrated on the barely talked-about aspects of these women's lives. So we're made to appreciate Leah's strength in being faithful and a woman who made the best of her situation, being rewarded in the end. We also consider the possibility that Tamar's rape and the subsequent deaths of her brothers were a result of the sins of their father.

I did, however, dislike that the book was repetitive. Some chapters were basically reconstructions of previous chapters. The sentences were repeated with slight adjustments, and the ideas were reshuffled. For instance, in Part 1, which was about Leah, some of its chapters had primarily the same content as every other chapter before it did. I found this a bit tedious and very boring.

I found only a couple of errors. The book was professionally edited. I would rate this book a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. I did not rate it higher because, while I think the book had a great idea, its execution left a lot to be desired. I would recommend this book to lovers of Christian literature.

This review brought up aspects of the two stories that I had never considered before. I was quite sure that Tamar’s problems were a result (indirectly) of David’s sin. Poor Leah, never wanted by anyone. Thanks!
