Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is an authentic and insightful memoir beautifully written by Dr Ghoulem Berrah. The book contains details about Dr Berrah’s life, from his early childhood in Algeria during the French colonial era to his involvement in the fight for independence. The memoir covers various aspects of the author's life, including family, education, encounters with racism, and the decision to join the resistance. Some chapters focus on the author's experiences in Morocco, his integration into the Moroccan Liberation Army, and his work as a physician in Taounate. One of the chapters of A Dream For Peace also delved into the author's experiences in the United States, where he attended Bennington College and had various experiences. He also had the opportunity to address the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, advocating against the oppression in Algeria. His diplomatic missions in Africa and his time in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where he witnessed the vibrant culture and engaged in diplomatic missions, were highlighted. He developed a close relationship with President Houphouët-Boigny and admired his fight against colonial injustices. Dr Berrah discussed efforts for peace, including dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians and the challenges faced in Algeria after gaining independence. The memoir emphasizes the importance of unity, understanding, and dialogue in achieving peace and prosperity.
My favorite thing about this book is the intimacy it offers, both in the author’s descriptive style of writing and the stories that the book contains. It gave me a personal glimpse into the author’s life, thoughts, and emotions. Reading this book also provided a good look into the French colonial era and the events that went down in North Africa, leading to modern-day countries like Morocco and Algeria. It was really insightful, especially coming from the perspective of one who was active in diplomatic relations. A Dream For Peace brought forth an enchanting love story between the author, Dr Berrah, and his wife, originating from divergent backgrounds. Witnessing their love was truly beautiful because it unveiled the profound challenges they encountered and overcame along the way.
I had one particular issue with this book, which was that it included information about historical events and individuals, but it did not provide proper citations. References to support these claims or to indicate the source of the information would have made for a more informative and factual read.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars regardless of the issue I have with it. This book felt like watching a documentary, especially with the pictures included and captions on it. I didn't remove a star because the negative point wasn't enough to warrant that. Also, I found no error in this book. It was exceptionally well edited.
I recommend this memoir to a wide range of readers who are interested in personal narratives, historical accounts, and stories of resilience and pursuit of peace. Overall, A Dream For Peace offers a multifaceted perspective on personal, historical, and political aspects, making it appealing to a diverse range of readers.
