Review of Passionate Purpose
Passionate Purpose: A Global Governance Journey by Jack J. Schramm is a fascinating memoir detailing Schramm’s life and career in public service. He began his public career when he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives. Prior to that, he worked with his brother in a law office after graduating from Washington University School of Law. He wasn’t satisfied with his career in private practice and began looking for other options to make the best use of his skills. It was interesting to read about how he became involved in the world of politics. He described every step of the process, including the positive and negative experiences he had with the political process. I was captivated by the detailed recollections of the political process. His focus transitioned from the state level to the federal level when he was appointed by the Carter Administration to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He had major successes in environmental protection and policy reform during his tenure with the agency. However, when Carter did not win re-election in November of 1980, Schramm had to change course and look for an alternative career that would keep him engaged in his passionate pursuits.
It was at this point that he accepted a position in the private sector with Waste Management, Inc. His new role was to lead their Government and Regulatory Affairs office in Washington, D.C. After eight years in this position, Schramm turned his focus to an international consulting firm. Initially, he worked in the domestic side of the business. However, this quickly changed to international consulting due to his wide range of knowledge in environmental law and policy. He worked successfully in many different countries to write laws and implement significant reform. As he described the work he was engaged in, he provided details about the historical and political background of many of these countries. These brief descriptions will help readers understand the issues he faced when working on necessary reform for these countries. He was so successful in this consultant role that he has done work in 26 different countries.
I enjoyed reading this book and learning about Jack J. Schramm’s phenomenal career. He has had major successes at state, federal, and international levels. I was fascinated by the details he included for each step in his career. As he described his positions, he conveyed the political process to readers in a way that was easy to understand for readers who may not be familiar with the political system in the United States of America. I especially appreciated the discussion about the Electoral College because that always seemed to be an area of confusion for people when there was a discrepancy between the popular vote and the electoral college. Readers will appreciate the details he provided about the positive and negative aspects of it and the author’s opinion about it.
What I liked most about this book is that Schramm’s personality and passionate nature are evident as he described his experiences. He has an appreciation for other countries and cultures. His descriptions of his travels are engaging and keep the reader interested in the details. I especially enjoyed reading about his motorcycle trip through the Middle East with his friend Cliff. He maintained a positive attitude through adverse conditions and a motorcycle that seemed to need constant repairs. However, the details he provided about the people he met as he traveled through the Middle East were heart-warming. He was given places to stay and had his motorcycle repaired numerous times free of charge by friendly people along the way. I enjoyed that he included these types of details in his memoir that show how much he appreciated these people during his journey. There was nothing that I disliked about this book.
I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I wouldn’t rate it any less because it is a compelling memoir written by a gifted writer who conveys fascinating details from a decades-long career. I recommend it to readers who have an interest in American politics, environmental issues, and international law or politics. Schramm has a writing style that is enjoyable to read as he described his personal experiences. It is also very educational for readers who want to learn more about these topics. He has a wealth of knowledge in these areas, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his experiences.
