Samurai warriors are renowned for appearing fearless and calm in the face of vicious battles. They are notoriously strong both physically and mentally. Most of us are not warriors or fight in ferocious battles, but we all live with some form of stress. Anxiety, depression, and trauma are often the result of stress. We hear a lot about the benefits that meditation can bring to improve our lives both physically and mentally. However, there are depths to meditation only those who have studied and practiced it consistently would know about.

The Warrior’s Meditation by Richard L. Haight introduces us to an extraordinary type of meditation created by the author after decades of studying martial arts and meditation. The Total Embodiment Methodology (TEM) is based on the mental awareness Samurai warriors needed, referred to as “no mind” in this book. When warriors went into battle, they needed to harness alertness of their surroundings and keep control of their emotional and mental state in what otherwise would be a terrifying event. The Warrior’s Meditation is a comprehensive look at meditation with an explanation of the role the state of our body plays in managing stress. The TEM method uses our senses in an entirely different way than simply seeing, hearing, smelling, and feeling. We learn a great deal about the function of our organs through the vagus nerve, the mental blocks that we have, and the role awareness and emotions play in our state of mind. Haight goes into detail about the different types of meditations and their effectiveness. With the help of tutorials and exercises, we learn a technique that is simple yet extraordinarily effective to implement.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is very detailed and engaging and taught me a lot about meditation that I had not heard about before. It is not the aim or purpose of this book to become an expert in the art of meditation. Haight makes it clear that we do not have to be professionals to meditate successfully, and once we get the hang of the technique, it will play a crucial role in our mental, emotional, and physical health. He goes into detail without it becoming overwhelming, which helps keep the reader’s attention throughout the book. I gained a lot of insight into the role the body plays in anxiety and depression. He also writes about the freeze, flight, or fight response when suffering from trauma. The debilitating effects of trauma can be directly addressed with the correct implementation of the TEM method.

As I have a keen interest in mental health, martial arts, and meditation, it was difficult to find anything negative to say about this book. All the information included is necessary to grasp what the author is teaching. The links to videos and tutorials made the book a lot more interactive than I had anticipated. Haight also breaks down each type of meditation so the reader can try each method and enhance their understanding of the various types.

I believe this book has been professionally edited. There were a few minor errors but nothing that detracted from the enjoyment of this book. I rate it five out of five stars as I learned a lot from reading this book and can implement the techniques daily. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in meditation and is on a path to learning about it in a more in-depth way. I believe we all need to take better care of our mental health, and this book would benefit anyone who takes the time to read it.
