I found this book to be exceptionally well written and extremely inspiring. Throughout the book he is honest about his flaws and being a workaholic but after years of practice admitted the flaws of the current medical system. He describes the existing issues that dominate and harm many marginalized and underserved communities. He shows the reader that there is more to an individual’s health than what we see and encourages a more humanistic and empathetic approach to understanding each other. He admits that the system can be extremely flawed for communities like the one he serves, because if a patient cannot afford a safe home or healthy food to eat, how can one expect them to see a doctor when they need to or to take their medications. He explains the need for a more holistic approach to medicine and that as a provider you cannot assume that everyone has access to resources. It is heart-warming to see that he is able to look past his own circumstances and wants to better understand his community and provide them with the real resources they require. It was incredible to read about the initiatives he undertook in order to help build trust within the community and take into consideration their beliefs. His commitment to these communities did not stop even when faced with COVID-19, rather he encouraged the community to better understand how the vaccine would work and how it will be beneficial for the community as a whole. He ensured that these communities could have access to the necessary education regarding the vaccine for COVID-19, as well he conducted Modern vaccine trials in order to ensure that these individuals would have the access they needed. He is a strong example of a community leader, physician, and partner to the community as he goes above and beyond for all of his patients and works with them to build back their trust.
Reading his story and his commitment to his community is beyond inspiring and encourages the reader to think about what they can do to help others and to live life with more empathy for others. For these reasons I gave this book a rating of 5/5 as it encourages the reader to look beyond what they see, appreciate what they have and look inwards to see how they can help improve the lives of those in their community.
