This book reads like 2 books in one. First it's the autobiography of a person who endured a horrific childhood and was self reflective enough to make wise decisions to survive and thrive. The author clearly had/has "grit" as he put it. But also it's a guide and inspiration for the rest of us; a reminder not to wallow in self pity. His 9 lessons logically progress, with his own life as example, how to make it through difficult times and come out thriving.
The only part I had a hard time getting through was when he got in the weeds of how he would plan and prepare for races. But at the same time it taught the lesson that if you want to achieve something, you have to approach it mindfully. He is very honest about his relationship with his father and you can feel the pain in his writing, despite his healthy attitude about it.
I don't know if I would have that same tenacity and drive, were I in his shoes. But that tenacity and drive to not be a victim, along with the joy of giving to others, is very inspiring. So give it a read. I give it a 4 out of 5

I give this book a 3 out of 5
