Thriving in the Storm stands out in a market inundated with self-help and advice books because Bill Murphy has a genuine voice. It is not a book of platitudes. As humans, our lives are complicated, but he encourages us to use the painful and dark moments of our lives to re-examine our thoughts, patterns, and actions. We can utilize that analysis to improve our future reactions too difficult situations. We need to face our pain and come out stronger.

We do get a message that many of us have heard before. You cannot control others. You can only control your own actions. Murphy uses his own life and story to tell us how to find that truth for ourselves in a new, unique way. I have given this book a 4 out of 5 because Murphy has laid his life bare, mistakes and achievements, in a way that is relatable and easy to read. He has balanced his individual experience with collective advice in a way that many people will relate to, across their differences.

The predominant reason that I have not reviewed Thriving in the Storm with 5 out of 5 stars is because the advice itself is not new in a way that distinguishes it from other similar books. Sometimes, the author will slip into language that seems simplified, but the readability is top notch. Self-help books can be trite and boring, but Thriving in the Storm is not.
