Kayla Taylor's book is a memoir that not only describes her and her family's journey but slso provides information, insight, compassion, empathy amd love for all children and families of all types. The primary focus is an the neurodiverse however any one who has ever struggled with life ie: everyone can relate.
As a fellow mother of children that are so much more than a diaganosis and also as an educator this book resonated with me on multiple levels. At the center of this narrative is the saga of Taylor's neurodiverse daughter Hannah's two year trauma of being bullied at an affluent private school. The story unfolds a retelling of events as well as a dive into the research and practices to understand the struggles of children and adults that are not "normal." She explores how the brokeness of not only her daughter's school but how our educational and social support systems also fail us all. Neurodiversity includes but is not limited to autism, dyslexia, sensory processing disorders, attention deficit/ hyperactivity, and more. All with their own unique challenges, nuances and strengths. While the story is informative, I as a reader felt like I was along for this family's journey with them. It was engrossing and emotional. I have felt Ms. Taylor's frustration with schools and the lack of empathy amd understanding. I have felt my own sense of fsilure as a teacher and parent. I highly recommend this book to anyone most especially anyone who is a parent, educator, counselor, school administrator or anyone who needs to know they are not alone. That is one of the major themes is that people are not alone. This was well written, insightfull and as a whole joyfull. Highly recommend 5 out of 5 and 4 out of 4.
