Review of Thriving in the Storm
Thriving in the Storm: 9 Principles to Help You Overcome Any Adversity by William Murphy is a self-help book that will change your life. If you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, or like you’re in a never-ending storm, this book is for you. Written by William Murphy, a man who has overcome incredible adversity in his own life, Thriving in the Storm offers nine principles that you can use to overcome your storms and achieve success.
Every chapter starts with a quote that is designated to the chapter itself. The book has an excellent beginning and describes the first steps to conquering adversity. The author, Bill Murphy, started the chapter by telling about the storm of the past that he was avoiding, that is, accepting his childhood trauma of abuse by his father, and that was one reason he could not reach his potential. The abuse he had received in childhood and how he came face-to-face with it
Every chapter gave great detail about the author’s life and all the hurdles and challenges the author faced, be it past trauma or any bad habit. He had given practical examples like how someone can find his purpose by letting their values be their guide, pursuing their passion, and finding their why. There are many detailed, real-life examples given by Murphy that he has applied to achieve his goals.
This book differs from other self-help books that only talk about how to do something and don’t give practical advice. But this book helps the reader understand the emotions faced by the author. And how he had applied the principles in his life to overcome the hurdles, and how we can apply these lessons in our lives. The book includes inspiring stories, such as "It's Never Too Late to Find Your Purpose," which features Louise Taxon, a loan officer who discovered her purpose in her 50s, along with many other real-life stories. And it has inspired me to realize that I can still do a lot to upgrade my life.
The best thing I like about the book is that after each chapter or topic, Murphy provides exercises to help the reader apply the principles in their own lives. These exercises are a great way to solidify your understanding of the principles and start making changes in your own life. These are the summaries of the topic, and how can you relate to the topic? In order to implement the things in our lives, the writer has provided practical solutions; for example, an exercise that helped me know what thing from the past I was clinging to. These exercises connect with each other. I would suggest filling out the exercises and trying to implement them in your day-to-day life; it can definitely change your life. I have filled them out, and I am trying to implement them into my daily schedule.
My rating is 4 out of 5 stars because there are some areas where the book doesn’t fit. Some principles may seem obvious, such as “accept the storm” and “don’t give up,” which may seem like common sense to some readers. The book may not be helpful for everyone. The book is based on Murphy’s own experiences and insights, and it may not be helpful for everyone.
I liked the principles, the exercises, and Murphy’s personal stories. However, I felt that the book could have been a little more concise. Some chapters felt a bit long and could have been condensed.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is facing adversity. I appreciate that Murphy shares his own story of overcoming adversity. I like the nine principles of thriving. I feel too motivated by the stories the author tells, all the exercises it has, and the practical examples, which are the principal motive of the book.
