This is an exciting read. The author, a mother, speaks on people's individuality as she focuses on her daughter who is considered different. Her daughter is hypersensitive, a trait that the author equates to being a canary, a bird that is highly sensitive to its environment and therefore has reactions that many are unable to understand. As her daughter faces bullying, anxiety and hypersensitivity, she becomes her biggest advocate as many of the adults in school seem to gloss over problems being faced. This leads the author down a rabbit hole where she begins her research into hypersensitivity, bullying, and the effect of bullying as well as neurodiversity and neuroplasticity to better understand her child and the needs of her child.
The book is very well researched as it referenced many papers written by those at the top of their fields. Although it is very technical, the author is able to simplify difficult topics in a way that is easily understood by the readers.
The book forces the reader to question their own biases and opens up one's mind to the adversities faced by others especially those that do not fall within the binary. This also leads one to think about the systems we have in place such as the United States educational systems and how we can change them to help everyone and not just those that are considered normal.
There are literary devices pre-present such as metaphors that are used to keep the literature interesting.
The book is very well edited as I found no grammatical or spelling errors. I would rate The book a four out of five. It is very well written but the one point that's missing is how difficult it is to read the book as it requires a lot of reflection on one’s part Forcing the reader to take breaks as they read the book.
