Thriving in the Storm Nine Principles to Help You Overcome Any Adversity by William Murphy is a self-help book based on the real-life experiences of the author. As the title suggests, the nine chapters of the book contain specific principles that the author followed when faced with different storms of life. Each chapter contains exercises that the reader can do to put into practice the recommendations that are given.
The book was easy to follow and enjoyable as the author recounts his own life stories. The reader could feel the pain, frustration, and sense the determination to overcome each adversity. It is an everyman or everywoman story. While the reader might not be able to relate specifically or identically to the author, they can relate to facing their own storms and adversities and how they respond to them.
He speaks of the past and how that impacts the present and future. I could relate to traumatic childhood experiences and how they can impact a person throughout life. I found many of his suggestions on how to deal with trauma to be helpful and practical. He speaks of starting with the past and the importance of forgiveness not only towards others but especially towards yourself.
Besides presenting his own experiences, he shares the advice that he received from his mother, mentors, and other significant people in his life. With every step and adversity faced, he constantly sought out sage advice from others. Each chapter gives a list of steps to take and follow. There are also exercises in each chapter that the reader can begin to put into practice the advice that has been given.
I felt that the epilogue was probably the most significant part of the book as he reminds the readers that there will always be another storm. He was right in that he faced a tremendous storm of his own, and he put into practice what he had been preaching for nine chapters.
I consider the book a good read in that the reader will be able to relate to the storms of life they have faced and will face, the practical advice which is given, and he practices what he preaches. However, it was a little long in places with too much information about his own personal accomplishments. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
