Review of The Beautiful Business
Wouldn't it be nice to have a business that satisfies its customers and gives purpose to its owner? A business whose culture is admirable and in which everyone acquires belonging? Or how about a business that doesn't solely exist to make profits? You might think that this would take a lifetime to accomplish, but what if I told you that it's so easy? A change in how you look at business can greatly affect its progress. It need not always be about producing results and getting ahead of the competition. It also doesn't have to be about advertising your business to a larger audience. All these are good incentives, but they are not a guarantee of business success. All that really matters is the owner's, or rather, the leader's, drive to do business—their 'why' for doing what they do. The establishment of a purpose for doing business beyond making profit is crucial for its success. The business should set a good culture and uphold values like trustworthiness and honesty. Proper communication should also exist in a business for it to succeed. Above all, leaders should be self-aware and know what works and what doesn't for their businesses. They should see themselves as artists, shaping their businesses into masterpieces. All this and more is captured in Steven Morris' The Beautiful Business.
I found this book very pleasing. It contains many real-life examples of business operations that the author has worked with in his twenty-plus years in business. The author cites a lot of references, which indicate deep research in the writing of this book. The language used is that of involvement, brought about through the use of rhetorical questions. Comparison has also been used for teaching, which was magnificent and greatly helped in the learning process.
There are so many definitions of 'beautiful' throughout the book, somewhat more than enough. This became tiring at some point. This made me feel as if I were in an English lesson. Other than that, the book was magnificent.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It's a unique book and has new information and advice on a better way to look at business. It uses simple language for better understanding by the reader.
I recommend this book to all leaders, regardless of their positions in any organization. It contains advice on how to go about business with a new and improved outlook. Those who want to evolve their businesses, their brands, and their lives should definitely read this book.
