Review:
In “Reconfigurement,” E. Alan Fleischauer documents a new way to look at retirement and argues that we need to plan ahead with a holistic view in mind by reassessing and rearranging our goals, financial programs, pre-and post-retirement activities such as employment and leisure. He emphasizes engaging in enjoyable activities before retirement and working in a job one loves. Fleischauer’s strategy provides an alternative to traditional retirement planning procedures, which typically involve the accumulation of as much wealth as possible pre-retirement while postponing leisure to post-retirement. He enlightens readers with a unique solution to meet new challenges facing retirees in the 21st century, such as increased longevity, technology and costs.
Among the descriptions of various financial tools, Fleischauer’s position on disability insurance is noteworthy and convincing. His experience and knowledge are apparent as he seems to understand the typical behaviour of individuals regarding the perception of a greater need for life insurance compared to disability insurance. His rationalization of the importance of disability insurance is persuasive and has led me to reassess and revisit my strategy. Fleischauer’s guidance on career assessment is also relevant and actionable. He understands the challenges his readers face, specifically new behaviours and interests developed over time; he outlines and opines about multiple resources to help reflect on one’s personality, behaviour, work values and interests for career assessments.
“Reconfigurement” is an excellent introductory resource for readers looking ahead at retirement as it explains various financial tools simply and clearly. It elucidates different types of insurance, investments, social security, wills and more.
While the book explains a new perspective on retirement planning for already financially-literate readers, those seeking detailed explanations about each tool with numeric calculations and assessments need to look elsewhere.
Many times, readers of ages 40 - 50 are more likely to plan for retirement, but “Reconfigurement” is also valuable to younger readers of ages 25 - 40 who are eager to learn about the financial tools available to face life’s challenges ahead. Fleischauer’s frequent humour and conversational tone relieve readers from the tension and intimidation of technical and financial jargon and successfully keeps his readers entertained and informed to complete the book.
Notes on typos and unintentional grammar errors:
1. Page 68 (Ch 8 - 401k and IRA): Missing image: The image which includes the joke is missing. It has not loaded.
2. Page 101 (Ch12 - Odds and Ends): Missing word in sentence : - Sentence: “This gives you nice start to freeing up free money.” should be written as “This gives you a nice start to freeing up free money.”
