Written in a conversational tone that’s easy to digest, Purpose breaks down the process necessary to help the reader find their purpose. Through explanations, examples, writing prompts, and tips for success, the reader is encouraged to reflect inward to define their purpose before expanding outward. With an emphasis on amplifying one’s purpose through the creation of community and more specifically via online communities, the book serves as a cheering section for anyone fostering a pet project or idea.
I ultimately found Purpose to be very encouraging. While I picked up the book not directly searching for my purpose, the methodology makes clear sense and has excited me enough to begin her process. By following the thoughtful and stepwise approach, I believe that I can make a positive change in my own life by evaluating what drives me and then setting a course towards it with renewed intent.
Interestingly, I did not take note of the authors name prior to reading this book. Initially I found it easy to only partially buy in to these recommendations that were coming from a CEO who was involved in tech before Steve Jobs discovered turtle necks. Realizing that this was being told through the lens of a female voice and from a female perspective helped me to engage more fully. Like anything that slants towards self help, what the reader will get out is proportional to the effort put in. This outlines an easy path to begin journaling without labeling it as such, and to set personal intentions based on the thoughts spilled forth during the journaling sessions. This takes it one step further and offers suggestions to give momentum to the purpose defined. Overall, I enjoyed Purpose by Gina Bianchini and at a 3 out of 5 star rating I would recommend it as a workshop to someone who is feeling at a crossroads in life.
