This book gives a parents perspective of bullying. The mother of Hannah that has been bullied by her fellow classmates, tells a story of her own experience. She comes across a book one night. author Glennon Doyle flashes back to a period in high school when she was admitted to a mental health facility. She recalls befriending her roommate and sharing with her a description of her great-grandfather, a coal miner who worked alongside a canary each day. Doyle writes, “When the toxin levels rose too high, the canary stopped singing, and the silence was the miners’ signal to flee the mine.” She then wondered aloud to her roommate if perhaps neither of them was “crazy” as society seemed to suggest. Maybe they were sensitive instead. Doyle’s teenage-self asked, “Could it be … that we aren’t making any of this up—we’re just sensing the very real danger in the air?” She continued, “I think the world is more than a little poisonous, and that [we] were built to notice that.” She told her new friend that “in lots of places, canaries are appreciated. They’re the shamans and the poets and the sages, but not here.” She is blown away by the metaphor and sees her own daughter is like a canary.
I rate this book 3 out of for good, I recommend it. I recommend this book because it would help a lot of people, understand, empathize, and sympathize with bullying or being bullied.
I rate 4 out of 5 above average. It is a great depiction of what someone can go through when being bullied are in situations as Hannah.
