Review of Grand Slam Life
Milton Haber's inspirational book A Grand Slam Life, co-written with Beth Herman, details the author's enlightening experience as a COVID survivor and how this period of time transformed his perspective to work selflessly for the development of his people.
Milton Haber was born in Laredo, Texas, to a Jewish mother and an American father. He never considered being a doctor as a child; instead, he was more interested in athletics. He received an unexpected call one day from a classmate inviting him to visit his campus in Mexico. The campus so impressed him that he attended medical school on a baseball scholarship in Mexico. He also completed his year of nationally mandated primary-care service in a small town called General Escobedo in Mexico. He was a holistic doctor who gave back to the community and built strong relationships with his patients. He founded Laguna Clinical Research Associates in his hometown, Laredo, to serve his people with a patient-centric approach. Soon after its establishment, Corona hit the world and brought everything to a halt. Being a Covid survivor himself, he wanted to use his story to raise awareness of the disease and the fact that there are medical professionals who genuinely care about their patients and the community. He worked with Moderna on Corona vaccinations and assisted with organising clinical trials and educating the public about its advantages to promote participation in the trials.
I liked the spirit of this book and the determination of the author to serve the community for a better future when the world was hit by a pandemic. He worked towards finding a cure and making sure it reached every sector. He educated people about the research and made them understand the benefits of it.
The explanations of his early years, which were so in-depth in the book that I occasionally lost track of them, were something I really disliked. To retain the flow and connection with his later years, these events could be briefly and succinctly explained.
I found a few errors in the book, but otherwise, the book was well-edited. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars for the above-mentioned point, which I dislike about it. Nonetheless, the book is insightful and inspirational.
I suggest this book to everyone interested in learning about how COVID affects numerous people's lives and what it takes to advance humanity in the face of apparent collapse.
