Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is a book that is based on the author’s own memoir. Dr. Gboulem Berrah was born in Algeria during the French colonial era. He lost his father at a tender age and was raised by his mother, Lalla Zebida, who, despite being a widow, did all that was in her power to give her son a sound education. Dr. Gboulem Berrah got a scholarship to study medicine at Bordeaux in France, where he became an activist. It was during this period of his life that he met his first wife, Antoinette. His dark days started when he was being pursued by the French police, which made him flee France for Spain, where he was arrested and imprisoned. He went to Morocco after he was released, where he became a medical practitioner and got married to his first wife. He later went to China and became the representative of the FLN (Algerian Liberation Front). It was during this period that he met Chairman Mao Zedong. He reached the peak of his career when he traveled to America as a prestigious Fulbright Scholar at Indiana University. He made a tremendous impact with his research in the biological sciences. After getting his Ph.D., he resigned to take up President Houphout-Boigny’s offer to serve as a special advisor in Côte d'Ivoire. This book is full of so many exploits by Dr. Gboulem Berrah that they cannot be summarized. Enjoy the never-ending impact of a great man.
There is so much to love about this book. The author gave everyone he met their due respect and honor, which is one of the things that helped him in his journey. The author’s tenacity in the face of challenges and opposition is one of the things that I enjoyed most in this book. Being a Muslim by birth, he respects and associates with people of other religions.
The author’s detailed description of his life journey was amazing, but I found the detailed description of some events and scenes in this book unnecessary. The unnecessary description of events made the book time-consuming, and I found it really boring at some point in the book. However, this book is written by a great man, and it projects a deep sense of purpose and meaning, so it is to be given its due respect by reading every bit of it to its last letter. This entire book is a gift to us, the younger generation.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book contains absolutely no profanity, and in spite of the length of the book, it was well edited; I could barely spot a grammatical typo, which is unusual with this genre of book. There is so much our generation can learn from the life of Dr. Gboulem Berrah: his exceptional ability to never give up on his dreams, the way he respects and holds everyone he meets in high esteem despite their beliefs, the way he didn’t allow his ambitions to compromise his dedication to his religion, etc.
I recommend this book to visionary people who desire a life of purpose and impact. We Africans are proud of Dr. Gboulem Berrah, so I urge all Africans to get a copy of this book and read it. Mothers who want the best for their kids should give this book to their children to read.
