A nice, quick, thought-provoking book that’s both fun to read and insightful! Dr. Goolsby builds this read around notion that the key to a healthy life is through positive visualization of a healthier you, creating specific goals to reach that mental image, and consistently working toward reaching those goals. He breaks this idea down further into twelve positive thinking “laws” that ought to be in place in order for something like this to work. This is a great book for self reflection and goal setting in order to cultivate a healthier life.

Dr. Goolsby draws on both personal experience as a physician and the research of those in similar fields to demonstrate the power of positive thinking. He deliberately ensures the reader that this isn’t the only “magic bullet” for achieving a bodybuilder champion physique or a bikini body; this is mainly a core component to add to other activities in order to achieve healthier goals. Dr. Goolsby has a helpful, structured way of showing this by introducing ideas to try for goal setting and incorporating mindfulness in your daily life. He includes these activities at the end of every chapter with a few others woven carefully within the chapters themselves. They’re easy, fun, and simple to apply to any lifestyle at virtually any time.

Though this read is full of stories and research to support his thesis, they don’t always tie together to form strong conclusions. Those that do are powerful, but those that don’t feel somewhat unnecessary. Positive thinking is not a concept that some can easily digest and, unfortunately, Dr. Goolsby’s evidence is not strong enough to convince these folks. That being said, there are some very encouraging concepts and points that are much easier to accept and are reflected in much of current health trends. It is overall an enjoyable book with something to try for everyone. A 3 out of 5 rating would be most fitting. It all starts with something very simple – our thoughts!
