A Dream for Peace by Ghoulem Berrah is a book about the struggle for independence from colonial powers and for self-rule in Africa. As such, the book is undoubtedly full of politics, war, discrimination, strife and bloodshed. The themes of heroism, bravery and unity against a common problem stand out. This memoir is about a devoted Muslim doctor who puts his life and freedom on the line in the fight for social justice for his people. According to the book, he also contributes to the medical profession and is "decorated by medallions from almost every country in the world." The quote by Thomas Jefferson that the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants comes to mind as the reader peruses the memoir.

In my opinion, the detailed account of events is the book's strongest feature. Nothing was overlooked. It is as if the reader is right there with the author during every encounter he has. Second, there is a clear flow of thinking, and events are chronologically organized. This improved my concentration and, as a result, my appreciation of the reading. Third, the photographs allowed me to see the characters, bringing them to life in my mind and enhancing my understanding. Fourth, I like that the author lived the history himself. As a result, his recollections can add a distinct viewpoint to the historical accounts that already exist.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. It was professionally written, edited, and presented. It is a thoroughly delightful read. It could have been better with some humour, but I can't complain.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed the rawness and honesty, the political strategy, the culture and diversity, and the relatively happy ending. It is a book that inspires reflection in the reader and has lessons that one can learn and apply. Consequently, I could not deduct even one star. It is one of the best historical accounts I have read in a long time.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in politics, history, or a realistic story. It is not for the faint of heart, though, as it features violence, oppression and discrimination. I would also not recommend this book to atheists because it contains religious topics related to Islam and Christianity.
