Are you feeling a bit low or are you just generally in need of a good laugh? Grab Poppy Mortimer’s book 28 Disastrous dates: A (mostly true) humorous memoir. It is bound to have you laughing out loud in no time!

Poppy shares her dating journey in her quest to find her “happily ever after”. Dates in the UK, Australia and the USA are included. She has a list of attributes, both physical and intellectual, that she applies when searching for a suitable guy to date. Poppy meets some of the guys face-to-face and also employs online dating and speed dating while searching for her ideal man. Some of her relationships continue past the first date but none of them survive in the long run.

I was shocked to read what people lie about on their social media profiles. Surely if you lie about your height or other easily observable physical attributes you must realise that you will be caught out at the first face-to-face meeting? If you lie about a character trait or personal preference it may take a bit longer to get discovered but in the end you can’t live a lie forever. I am very grateful that I’m happily married and have never had to revert to online dating.

Poppy treats every date almost like a case study. She provides background information on how the date came about, describes the date itself and ends with the lessons learned from the encounter. She includes a summary of all the lessons learned at the end of the book and that serves as an easy reference guide for readers who may want to revise the lessons again in future.

Poppy also shares other parts of her personal life with her readers. She is a very successful entrepreneur and helps other people to improve their businesses as well. She loves animals so much that she does not eat meat or animal products. Her love of animals and a vegan lifestyle are very important to her when evaluating a potential candidate for a date. She has an exceptional relationship with her mother and her love and admiration for her mum are expressed in several passages in the book.

It is difficult to get one’s head around one woman having so many totally different disastrous dating experiences. It made me wonder about the “mostly true” inclusion in the book title – just kidding! I find it amazing that some people have really disgusting habits or hygiene issues and don't feel the necessity to change their behaviour.

Poppy is a great storyteller and reading her book is like eavesdropping on her conversations with a group of her friends. She has a wonderful sense of humour and even her most traumatic experiences remain palatable to the reader as a result.

There are only a few very minor errors in this book and the editing was exceptional.

I did not enjoy the way she described some of her characters in a derogatory fashion, for example, referring to an old man as a “coffin dodger”. The only way we will escape old age is if we die before we get there. These descriptions did not spoil my overall enjoyment of the book.

I rate this book 5 out of 5.
