Have you lost your sense of wonder and curiosity? Are you struggling with the monotony of everyday life? Do you wish you could overcome what seem to be limiting beliefs about yourself in your work or personal world? Pick up a copy of The MISOGI Method by Jody B. Miller and find your passion renewed.

Like most self-help authors, Miller has found personal satisfaction and results from her preferred “get-out-of-that-rut” process, and her book guides the reader through not only her own private life but also the success stories of a myriad of other people. The Misogi is a Japanese ritual of standing under a freezing waterfall in order to purify oneself, and it has grown and developed into a modern-day method for challenging yourself, increasing self-confidence, following a dream, and going outside your comfort zone.

After defining the ritual and expounding upon its benefits in today’s world, Miller explains the process of finding your own personal Misogi, including self-reflection as well as observation of the world around you. She then guides you through the planning and execution stages of your Misogi.

I enjoyed the many words of compassion and encouragement throughout this book. It’s easy to feel that a Misogi is not only possible, but that Miller is your own personal cheerleader throughout the process. The reader will come away with a renewed energy and positive outlook on life and his/her/their ability to contribute to a better world.

While the book uses simple language and is a smooth read, I cannot give it a higher rating than 4 out of 5 stars because of the apparent lack of editing. The number of typographical and grammatical errors is high, which was quite distracting to me. In addition, the author fills hundreds of pages with anecdotes from her podcast and the transcript of her own Ted talk, which seems like excessive self-promotion and a desire to fill space.

In all, I enjoyed learning about the Misogi method and I felt that Miller did a solid job of explaining, encouraging, and helping the reader to dream big! This book has suggestions of profanity but is suitable for most audiences interested in self-help and expansion.
