A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an enviable memoir about the author’s life, the daunting challenges he had to go through and overcome, the peculiar struggles of his people and continent, the continuous fight for self-determination and freedom, and the exploits and victories of a man possessed of nothing but hope and faith.

Starting with quite a disadvantageous background and a series of setbacks, Dr. Ghoulem lost his father at a very tender age and was raised by his mother, Lalla, and his stepbrother, Fodil, who took up the responsibilities of the head of the family. Despite these glaring early struggles, he rises about the setbacks and becomes the first scientist to proffer a hypothesis on the ‘Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme.” I urge you to pick up this book to discover and learn from the travails and victories of a man who played a pivotal role in the fight for the liberation of the African continent.

There were many things to admire about this book. The author’s strong spirit and incredible resilience stand out like a sore thumb throughout this book. The number of challenges and setbacks he had to rise above will provide a source of inspiration and courage for everyone who picks up this book. Not only this, he was fearless and selfless in defending the things he believed in, such as freedom, peace, equality, and the right to self-determination for his country and other countries in the African continent.

Despite the increased length of this book, I found only a few errors. This goes to prove that this book was professionally edited. The pictures provided by the author in this book also helped me visualize the events of the past and follow smoothly with the narration by the author, enriching my reading experience. Through this book, readers will learn valuable life lessons, such as the courage that is needed to stand up for themselves and others despite the obstacles along the way.

The story about how he met his wife, Titi, was endearing and provided a huge source of comfort and relief from the otherwise sober and moody events laced in this book. It also served to highlight the author’s softer and more domesticated aspects. I found nothing to dislike about this book except its excessive length, which can pose a problem for some readers. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and the negative aspect above cannot detract from the book’s endearing qualities. Consequently, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to lovers of historical memoirs and political books.
