Let's Help You Self-Help! - An Inspirational Passionate Handbook for Your Path By Anthony Jacob Braaten is an ideal handbook to gift to someone we care about.

In the beginning note, the author introduces himself as a patient who has undergone several mental ordeals and makes it clear that he is not an expert healer. Thus, positioning himself as one among the readers, he seeks to help other people cope with their mental health issues.

The author’s tone is friendly and direct as opposed to patronizing. His summarization of the success and failures of his life strikes a chord with the reader.

As the title proclaims, this is a doer’s book- that means the returns are proportional to our active participation and the book would not help much as a passive read.

The book provides ample space for readers to jot down their points- a good tactic to keep the reader involved. The book calls upon the readers to consistently note down his or her real feelings, failures and successes, so a physical copy would do much better than an online one.

Written in easy-to-understand language and diligently edited, the book encourages us to be loving and grateful and suggests ways to let go of our unpleasant past experiences. Beginning with will power, the book has elaborate chapters on twelve life skills that according to the writer will enhance one’s happiness. The book split into neat chapters focused on a particular life skill tries to provide a certain structure to our self-improvement efforts.

In the beginning the author describes success as- I see "success" as having peace of mind and being filled with joy over what I have achieved. And the forthcoming pages are centred around this. So, if your own idea of success is in sync with the author, the book will be an appealing read- leading to a path of self-discovery.

I would not suggest using this book as a stand-alone guide as some of the methods suggested might not be practical in an overwhelming situation. Some readers could find it tedious to fill in the blank lines provided in each chapter. For me, a single reading was not enough and for better understanding, I had to go through it again and again- sometimes focussing on individual chapters.

I would rate it as 5 out of 5 as instead of promising an instant miracle, this book allows /extorts you to take baby steps to uplift yourself. A comprehensive activity list and some worthy book recommendations are an added bonus.
