Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
Based on her perceptions and experiences in the healthcare industry as a medical practitioner and a patient, Barbara Galutia Regis, M.S., PA-C, writes a memoir-like book titled Surviving the "Business" of Healthcare: Knowledge is Power! A Unique Perspective from a 4th Generation Family Practice Provider and Now Cancer Patient. Hailing from a long line of medical practitioners, from her great-grandfather down to her father, it was almost a genetic decision that Barbara would find her pursuit in the medical field. She had surgery when she was diagnosed with cancer, which cumulated her experience in the industry as a patient. With over two decades in the medical business, Barbara brings empowerment and education to the public and those involved in the medical field.
The author shared stories from her childhood and how she found inspiration by watching her father overcome the struggles that came with the medical field. She also delved into the US healthcare system, including its historical and modern-day practices. She emphasises how the practice of medicine has become more of a business and deploys knowledge to readers on how to get the best of medical care by leveraging healthcare insurance.
As a non-medical person, I found the book not only inspiring but very educational. I was able to grasp and understand the book as it was written in simple language without the unnecessary use of medical jargon. The author was also very relatable, sharing her experiences both as a medical practitioner and personal stories, one of which she was a patient.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book was a great read. It was not unnecessarily lengthy, and it contained valuable and educational details. I wished the pictures were placed in context with the experience rather than put together at the end of the book, yet, the book was a wholesome experience! The author was able to delineate issues pertaining to the healthcare system and offer solutions to the public. Also, the book was perfectly edited.
I recommend this book to everyone. Everyone would have an interaction with the healthcare industry, either as a medical practitioner, a patient, a carer, or a guardian. I think the public will easily find this book beneficial; it is simply constructed, and it is also interesting to read.
