Review of Odyssey of High Hopes
Born in 1933 in Shiraz, Cyrus Ansary lived quite difficult childhood with his parents, siblings and other relatives. They later moved to Tehran, Iran’s capital city to enable his elder brother; Hushang, to study medicine at the university after he completes high school. Will their life become better in Tehran? I recommend you to read this book and find out for yourself. Ansary was later admitted to Alborz, one of the best high schools in Tehran after he performed well in his elementary studies and became the second-best in his country. His participation in the New York Herald-Tribune, while representing his school and country, sparks his dream of studying abroad, specifically in the U.S.A. While back in Iran, he lands a lucrative job at the American embassy. This becomes his stepping stone, to finding a way to return to America by applying for higher studies in Paschal High School.
Reading through the book;ODYSSEY OF HIGH HOPES by Cyrus A. Ansary, the reader will notice that this autobiography is one that needed to be shared. The author’s passion and zeal are quite encouraging, as he is a go-getter and never stops at anything less than success. Nietzsche’s phrase; “Suffering ennobles” kept him going despite the challenges he faced, both at family and professionally. The book is divided into three sections. In book II(Law and Finance, the Dynamic Duo)The author illustrated how he bet the odds and managed to study and graduate with a degree from Columbia University, secured his American citizenship and later opened and owned a bank, and his family life. In book III(A Spirited Pursuit), the author can connect with world great leaders to present his proposals, the author’s character of integrity also comes out strongly as he was not a man of compromise but principled, a philanthropic man who gave back to the community. The author’s language was also moderate, I liked the fact that I had to use the dictionary to understand some of the vocabulary used as this also helped me to learn new words. Towards the end of book II, the author also shows the readers different photos of his parents, Tehran, Alborz, spouse and children among others. This helps the reader to get a clear picture of personalities and places being read about.
From my experience reading the book, I found that it possessed several remarkable strengths, including an engaging narrative style and a talent for portraying different scenarios. However, the author could have maintained one book and listed the other books in sections; II and III instead of writing two other books. Based on this, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The book was professionally edited. I found no error while reading it.
I would recommend this book to lovers of autobiographies, aspiring entrepreneurs, and youths, to encourage them that everything is possible, if they have a focus in life, they can make it big despite their background, just as the author did!
