A Dream For Peace is a non-fiction book by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. In the book, the author shared his life story and his contributions towards his country's Independence. He was born into a modest and humble family during colonial rule of France. Even though his father was late, his mother did everything to support his academic ambition. His uncle and some members of the family also chipped in with their support when and where necessary. His early life was full of struggles, and the odds were stacked against him. Despite this, he didn't give up and he managed to conclude his high school education. He was accepted to study Medicine at the University of Bordeaux in France. His sojourn in France was not what he expected it to be due to rampant racism. He developed a great resistance against racism and discrimination of African students. He even went as far as organizing an association to protect the interests of African students. He also engaged in political activities, but his movements were usually restricted. Sometimes, he had to hide from his opposition and the authorities. In no time, Dr. Ghoulem became popular, and he was known far and near, by friends and foes. He led an interesting life, and his impact is known in France and his home country, Algeria.

A Dream For Peace is a book with deep historical details. The book gives a great insight into the colonial rule of France in Algeria until Algeria gained her independence. The book is interesting and remarkable. The story of Dr. Ghoulem shows how the impossibilities can be made possible through hard work, persistence, tenacity and perseverance. I learned a lot from the life and experience of Dr. Ghoulem. I also like the leadership characteristics shown by Dr. Ghoulem when he was studying in France. He tried everything to make his fellow students be at ease. I admire how the students ignore their religious differences and backgrounds, and stick together in the fight against oppression and racism. The writing style is also engaging which makes the book very interesting.

A Dream For Peace is very educative. The only fault I found in the book was its length. The memoir is a bit lengthy which might put off some readers.

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The plot of this book is clear, and the book itself is well-structured. The author explicitly narrates all the details of every event in the fight for freedom. I didn't find any errors while reading so the book was exceptionally proofread and edited. I must also admit that the content of the book really worths its length.

I would recommend A Dream For Peace to people interested in reading about the history of Algeria's Independence. The book is also suitable for political activists and lovers of historical non-fiction.
