Review of A Dream For Peace
Born in a small town in the province of Constantine in Algeria, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah watched the French settlers enjoy all the good things in their country while they lived in their own fatherland as the less privileged in A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. As part of the French mainland, the French government annexed Algeria. They have been fully in charge of the activities of Algerians since they colonized them. Everything seemed different and impossible with this treatment in place. With this, it becomes so necessary for someone to take a big step to liberate his country, and this is what Berrah has to do. Lucky to be on scholarship and study abroad, Berrah organized a union; the other African students and Muslims there had to join, and they all came together for a smart freedom fight. Meanwhile, all these were directed towards one thing: independence for Algeria. I’m sure it will be hard to guess what happened next. Find out about the next events that followed after you got your copy of this book.
Just as it is popularly believed that behind every successful man is a woman, the same thing applies to this book. Even Berrah noted this in the book, saying that his mother molded him and shaped the man that he became. Even while he was in school, his mother managed to help him memorize and recite French comprehension successfully while she did not even comprehend the language, let alone speak it. She also refused to marry another man after the death of Berrah’s father because she feared that the new man might not raise her children in accordance with her standards. This buttressed the fact that women need to play a great role in the lives of their children. I’ve seen books where the authors also noted that their mother was poor at taking care of them. To see a book like this where the author appreciates his mother is fantastic. I enjoyed it. The author’s family is another aspect of the book that I enjoyed. We could learn that one of his cousins, Fatima, was the first pharmacist in Algeria.
The memoir was full of hypnotizing information, both about the author, his family, his education, and his fight for freedom. There is no way for me to have come up with any negativity in the book. It contained positive things all through.
I did notice some errors in this book. While I noted this, I must also note that these errors did not affect my reading. So, for the errors not affecting my reading and for the book containing no negatives, I rate the book five out of five stars.
Have you read before about a freedom fighter, his amazing family, and his approach to achieving freedom for his country? If not, then you are recommended to read this book.
