Addressing Systemic Discrimination by Reframing the Problem by Dr. Frank L. Douglas is a timely intervention that seeks to breach the gap of depression, hatred, and envy that is brought about in the world today by factors like injustice and racism.

The book covers the effects of lack of equity and inclusion which are brought about by the assumption by some that others do not deserve the same treatment and privileges as themselves. It is commonplace in the world today for most people to be unproductive or not productive because they feel they do not belong. The author approaches this problem in a very comprehensive way with very concrete examples and comes up with possible solutions both for those who are responsible for propagating inequity and those who suffer the consequences of inequity.

The story in the first chapter brings out a very good example of a certain level of discrimination due to race. The reaction of the white colleague at the end of the story points out how normal discrimination is for many individuals in specific countries. It seemed normal for a 74-year-old black man to be held by six police officers and almost accused of causing an accident because of a smudge on his vehicle. Even after proving himself innocent, the officers left without a single word of apology.

I loved the case studies the author presented. They are a few among millions of scenarios in which the concerns, needs, and feelings of fellow human beings are ignored by others with little or no remorse. What I loved most was that in each of the case studies, the author came up with a tentative solution for each of the affected individuals. It reflects the system of thinking everyone ought to adopt, especially when it comes to people who are underprivileged or are likely to experience discrimination in a given circumstance.

I found nothing at all to dislike about the book. I enjoyed reading the book, and it has helped me adopt a new ideology towards equity and racial discrimination. The book was perfectly edited. No errors interrupted the flow of reading. With all the points above, I give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone passionate about curbing or stopping racial discrimination and inequity.
