Last-born children are the runts of their families. In the circumstances when they are unplanned, they do not receive as much care, as the kids before them. Cyrus is the last child in the Ansary family. Fascinated by his father’s shadowed childhood, the little boy strives to uphold all his father’s values in good stead. The Ansary family is a middle-class family in cash-strapped Iran but they take this in stride and work hard to make life easier for all of them. Lucky for all of them, the children get good grades. However, Cyrus is infatuated with the prospect of living and studying in the United States of America. He first gets a taste of the country through a forum convening many high school students from all over the world in New York. When he is forced by to his homeland by the forum’s circumstances, he works and saves money to go back to America and study there. This then heralds the story of an immigrant in the United States.

With no more excuses to give his wife, Cyrus A. Ansary writes his autobiography. He is one of the most successful immigrants ever to set foot on American soil and thanks to his serious determination and work, he can survive. His writing is well described, showing and explaining every detail to the reader. This makes the story more enthralling as it is easy to imagine and visualize. As expected in many an autobiography, there are a lot of sentimental feelings toward important people in their lives and life-changing events. The emotions and feelings are clearly stated and well organized and you can help but be a part of Ansary’s story.

Odyssey of High Hopes is subdivided into three parts detailing each step Cyrus takes in his life. The parts begin with a wonderful anecdote or interesting dilemma that the author gets himself into and ends with a thought-inducing epilogue that has the reader thinking ‘How can I be like Cyrus?’. Well, it happened to me a lot of times as I read the book. I could not find anything negative to comment upon in this book. The book contains very few instances of profanity.

This book appears to be exceptionally well-edited as I did not find any grammatical errors in the book. I rate this book five out of five stars for the above reasons.

I would recommend this book to an audience of new immigrants in every country, high school students, lawyers, economists, and business people. I feel that Cyrus Ansary’s life would motivate them in their day-to-day lives.
