Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace is Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's memoir, describing his personal experience in his quest to bring peace and more about African politics and colonization. He comes from a humble family living in Constantine Province, northeastern Algeria. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah got an excellent education and completed a master's and a doctorate in medicine. Despite succeeding in education and having a well-paying job as a professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah felt his life purpose was not fulfilled and decided to quit teaching and research activities he was conducting at Yale School and embark on working for a better world, i.e., to bring peace and harmony into the world. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah joined President Houphouët Boigny's government in Côte d'Ivoire as a special counselor and diplomatic adviser. He accepted the opportunity in order to achieve his dream of bringing peace to the nations. He and President Houphouët Boigny formed a strong friendship and worked together to bring peace among countries, such as on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. He was sent on many diplomatic missions, including ones involving global politics.
Pros: I admire Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's characteristics in the book. He was hardworking, trustworthy, and loyal to the extent that President Houphouët Boigny associated him with everything, including his personal and family affairs. I also admired the author's relaxed way of recounting and narrating events in a conversational tone. In the cases of acronyms on some pages, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah aided by providing the footnotes at the end of each page.
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah gives detailed descriptions and facts of diplomatic missions, the practices of Islam, the uniqueness of our faiths, and our core beliefs, which complement the story well aside from political and colonial histories in the book. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah aided his experiences and the occurrence of events in the book by supplementing black-and-white photos. His main message through the story is to embrace peace through dialogue. A country with peace can progress in terms of economy, trade, industrialization, etc.
There was no negative aspect in the book I disliked; however, I found a few errors, although they didn't distract my attention while reading the book. I will give A Dream for Peace 5 out of 5 stars because of its positive aspects. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah has all my credit for his self-sacrifice, commitment, and the many obstacles he overcame in his quest; otherwise, his book is professionally edited and well-written.
A Dream for Peace has enlightened me on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, politics, and colonialism in African countries. I recommend this book to people who love memoirs about politics and colonialism history, to history enthusiasts and students, for them to learn the history of Africa.
