Review of How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is an insightful book that provides tips and advice on how to become successful in any niche by thinking like a leader. The author uses real-life examples and interviews with successful people to illustrate his points and make them relatable to readers.
What I liked about the book was the author's inspiring journey, where he battled brain cancer and other health issues to achieve his goals. It was moving to learn how the author used to shower at a gym to save money and how much his family had to cope with.
The practical advice that readers can apply to their lives was valuable. For example, the importance of networking and being well-groomed were valuable. I appreciated the amount of research that went into the book, as well as the diversity of the interviewees from different backgrounds and professions. It was nice to see the same questions asked to different people from different backgrounds. Despite the questions being the same, the answers were miles apart!
One of the main things I loved about the book was how success is never truly defined, despite the book teaching readers how to be successful. Each person who is interviewed is first asked how they define success. This gives readers the scope to pick a definition that resonates with them and follow the advice related to it. What a great way to expand your audience and make the subject more inclusive!
At the same time, it is interesting to note the qualities and personality traits people look for. A lot of them overlapped, such as honesty, integrity, loyalty, and morality, among many others. I also appreciated the various book recommendations scattered throughout the book.
The author gives readers several ways to network, communicate, and connect with successful people and entrepreneurs. But the one I loved the most was reading more books. He mentioned how reading books by successful people is almost like spending time with them and having a conversation about their ideas. This was such a refreshing and unique perspective for me as an avid reader.
However, the font style and layout of the book were not very appealing. Moreover, the frequency of typos was distracting. Some of the answers were too long and colloquial, which made the content sound less professional. I understand that the author wished to retain as much information as possible to keep the conversations natural. But when some answers stretched to three or four pages, I had to scroll up and check what the question was again!
Additionally, the book may be better suited for Christians. This was due to the fact that several Bible verses were referenced throughout the text. There are some lessons taught through biblical characters as well. I am sure the reason for this choice was due to the author's being Christian himself. At the same time, one of his interviewees was a pastor at a church, and another was the author’s mother. So, it makes sense that their beliefs would overlap.
Overall, I would give this book a solid 3 out of 5 stars. While it has some shortcomings, the book provides valuable insights and inspiration for anyone looking to succeed in their chosen field. It is best suited for individuals who are looking for practical advice on how to think like a leader and learn from the experiences of successful people.
