Reading is an essential ability for everyone, but how do we even learn how to read in the first place? This May Be Difficult to Read, But You Really Should (for your child’s sake) by Ph.D. Claire N. Rubman tackles the herculean task of explaining what could be the best way to teach children how to read, and I don’t mean to say the words out loud but to comprehend what’s being read.

Contrary to its title, the book is easy to follow thoroughly. The book itself is divided into different sections according to what Dr. Rubman is tackling. From dismantling the most spread myths about how kids can learn faster how to read and early childhood education, to bringing new knowledge about the cognitive process that takes place in the child’s mind, to strategies created by the author to help parents and instructors teach kids reading comprehension in a natural way, as well as exercises and games to practice reading.

Some scientific terms are used in this book, but the author explains them in a simple fashion, also linking them to the source of information in case you want to delve further into the topics presented. These terms are offered in a way that gives you a deeper understanding of the mental process of reading and what qualities are needed to do so.

As someone who doesn’t have children but expects to have them in the future, this book made me think about how important it is to know how to educate kids and to be able to teach them important skills, such as reading, in a way that’s both lasting and fun. It was engaging in its narration and even interactive in some parts. I can confidently say that there is nothing I dislike about the book. It’s a guide that you can always come back to with backed-up facts and suggestions for a variety of activities to practice reading with children.

I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, as there is nothing I don’t like about it. It was greatly contextualized and entertaining in its teachings. It is clear that the text was professionally edited as I did not find any errors. The visual design is also compelling, including images fitting to the section accompanied by relevant footnotes. I would recommend this book to new and future parents, teachers, and anyone who has an interest in the in-depth process of teaching reading. Otherwise, this won’t be your cup of tea.
