A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a book that covers Dr. Berrah’s real-life experiences. With the author having lived such a full life, it is easy for the reader to become quickly immersed in this book. His amazing life is documented throughout the book, and the reader gets to see his triumphs and his struggles. It leaves one with the question; "How can one person achieve so much during their lifetime?"

Dr. Berrah was born in Algeria during French colonial rule. He was raised in a household that encouraged him to pursue his education to the highest possible level. With his mother supporting and encouraging him, he managed to do well in school, and he went on to win a scholarship to attend a prestigious university. Through this scholarship, he managed to become one of the very few Africans to travel abroad and study in France. This was a great feat, as only a small group of elite Africans managed to be selected for this opportunity.

He went on to attend the University of Bordeaux for medicine. He took an interest in activism because of the people he met at university, and eventually he began taking part in the fight for the independence of Algeria from the French. This came at a cost as it resulted in him being under the government’s radar, but this did not stop him. He managed to stay out of their grip, and he eventually became a doctor who helped people far and wide. He became more and more involved in politics as the country slowly moved towards independence.

This book was a great read filled with amazing, inspiring stories about the author. His accomplishments were a joy to read about. He seems to have poured his heart into this book. His passion for activism as well as his drive is very prevalent in his journey. There were many hurdles along the way, such as threats from the colonial government, but this did not stop him from fighting for the right thing. As a leader for the people, he was consistently on the front lines when it came to fighting to free his people from the colonial government. Due to this, a lot of people looked up to him.

I enjoyed the style that the memoir is written in. When reading this book, it almost felt like I was having a conversation with the author or listening to him narrate his life. The in-depth recollections of the events that occurred are also very impressive. This is because they are narrated with great detail, which further showcases how great the author’s memory capacity is. I liked this aspect of the book. Another aspect of the book I liked is the language that the author uses. The author uses easy-to-understand language, which made it easy to follow the stories. Pictures of Dr. Berrah’s life are also used to allow the reader to envision what his life might have been like during the height of his activism. Although the quality of some of the pictures might not be the best, they served their purpose regardless.

The book also gives great insights into what the lives of Algerians looked like under colonial rule. With a lot of African history being destroyed during colonialism, this book provides a small window into firsthand accounts of someone who lived through the era. This is a great book, and I did not find anything I did not like about it.

I give this book five out of five stars because it was a fantastic experience and it both challenged and inspired me in several different ways. The book also seems to be exceptionally well edited as I did not find any grammatical errors. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book on activism, colonization of Africa, particularly Algeria, and an all-round great figure to read about.
