Review of A Dream For Peace
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's autobiography, A Dream For Peace, details his life. Political unrest was present during the author's formative years. As he tells his life, we gain knowledge of the history of the struggle for independence fought by Algeria and other African nations. We witness the author combat racism, colonialism, and other forms of human oppression. Dr. Berrah escaped to Spain after learning of plans for his arrest and spent some time there in prison. He continued to fight for Algeria's independence after being freed, then relocated to Morocco to practice medicine in a town that had seen conflict. He made a big contribution to the ongoing fight to open up communication between Israel and Palestine.
The author's friendships with his fellow soldiers are wonderful. Many of them went above and beyond to help the author, despite their varied backgrounds and nations. He learned about their own revolutions from the Vietnamese students. People in China were warm to him and gave him their honest thoughts. He came there to study microbiology, and the American government provided everything he required. Even a few of his French acquaintances protected him from the police and warned him about the risks. When Fidel Castro was due to give a speech, a hazardous situation would arise. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah requested that the sound source be muted after receiving the speech text because he anticipated an issue.
There was not a single component of the book entitled A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah that I did not enjoy. It was fascinating to read about Africa's struggle for independence as viewed through the lens of someone who was there at the time, despite the book's length. Global political problems, like the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, were given life and rose above the level of being merely historical anecdotes. Because of his perseverance and compassion, which were visible throughout the novel, the author was a fascinating figure. I was impressed with the author for marrying a Christian against fierce opposition from his Muslim family.
I was better able to follow the material because of the author's choice of straightforward language in the plot. No grammatical faults were there, which is proof that the text was edited by a professional. Because of the aforementioned factors, I give A Dream for Peace a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
I suggest this book to fans of historical non-fiction since the memoir offers insight into Africa's post-decolonization history. I really hope you had as much fun reading this book as I did.
