Review of Purpose
Purpose: Design a community and change your life. Gina Bianchini
The preface was easy to read, and made lots of promises. Moving on enthused by the preface, She explains how personal tragedy highlighted the need for community to support others. A brief history about the boom and bust years of the dot.com industries and the rise of social networking and how this morphed into social media. From this she believed that building online communities could strengthen individuals and help them achieve purpose.
By incorporating the “Hero’s Journey” and linking it to Maslow’s network of needs the book describes how to be able to transcend our need for purpose, and to succeed we need a community to help us envision our own future. She offers us a framework to put into practice, which then leads us to being able to craft a “future story” for ourselves. It was easy to relate to the “Action Trap of Modern Life”, it seemed logical how this can be overcome by building community and not just joining a community but hosting one. So transforming from the hero in your quest you become a host of your own community. The Community design agreements give you a format for keeping the community on track, you are reminded to keep referring back to your community design plan. Making sure that your purpose is the focus for connections, but being prepared for the surprises that come your way.
Gina Bianchini, gives a good account of how and why she came up with her strategy for wanting to help people recognise the importance of community and how this can help them achieve their own purpose in life. She has her own company who supports online communities and by writing her book Purpose: Design a community and change your life, she reinforces how everyone can achieve their goals in life.
This book is a self help book with a difference, as it not only wants to help you find a true purpose, but goes through the steps needed to build a successful online community to help and support you in your quest. It is well laid out and easy to read. The book also looks at some of the pitfalls and gives guidance on how to find your purpose and how to start to set up a community of your own to support your quest for purpose.
It highlights how we are designed to be part of a community and that by being part of a community we become stronger, she has taken this one step further and is proposing that we start our own communities on line to build strength and help us meet that purpose, even offering support to those who are struggling with the concepts.
I would rate this book at 3 out of 5 stars. Some of the sections were hard to follow as they involved quite a lot of name dropping and some of the future forecasts were hard to believe, however all in all a good read and it does contain some useful frameworks for living a more purposeful life.
