The biggest question of our generation of parents is, “Is screen time good or bad for my kids?” So many different opinions from friends and family can leave a parent struggling to find any valuable answers. After reading Mindful Screen Time by John and Kimberley Woods, I’ve concluded that my opinion on the matter of screens is truly the only one I should be listening to. Being parents themselves, John and Kimberley Woods have a personal investment in how the effect of screen time can help and hurt our children in their development.

In addition to the authors’ opinion, the research shown throughout this book gives you a real inside look at why the above question has so many different answers. I think we all want what is best for our kids, right? Being misinformed by social media posts from friends and family can play a huge factor in how we form our own opinions on certain things. Mindful Screen Time has plenty of information to help with parental guilt, pros and cons of tablets, video games, lazy kids and so much more. Putting their personalities into the book really gives the reader a better feel for what point they are trying to make.

I really enjoyed the content of this book. It is full of information that I, personally, found very helpful. Finding that happy balance of using screens will forever be an issue, but using what I’ve learned through reading this book will make screen time much less scary to manage. There were a lot of well researched and cited information from several different T.E.D talks and studies that I found really grounded what the authors were trying to say.

It was hard to find much to dislike about Mindful Screen Time, but there were a few points that could come across as nonsensical to certain people. It all comes down to a matter of opinion and where the source of information derives. Everything boils down to opinion and this sensitive topic is no different. I did find a few mistakes grammatically and a spelling error here and there, which is why I’m rating it a 4 out of 5.

I would recommend this book to anyone who spends any time at all with children. It provides a lot of insight from well educated parents and their researched information on screen time. Parents and grandparents would find a lot less to argue about after giving this a quick read, in my opinion, regarding IPads and cellphone usage.
