Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an autobiography of the author as he narrates his life journey from childhood to old age. The author also narrated his involvement in the struggle against colonialism and for Algeria's independence.
Ghoulem Berrah is the son of Hamedi Berrah. He was an intelligent young man who grew up in Algeria during French colonial rule. Berrah was a Muslim. Despite the fact that he lost his father when he was a child, his mother was able to support him through school. She made sure he had a formal education. Berrah attended the College de Batna and then received a scholarship to the University of Bordeaux in France to further his studies in medicine. A lot happened while he was at the university, as he was a member of a group that fought against injustice and discrimination. After being imprisoned for his actions, he got out of prison and achieved a lot, to the point that he became the president of Côte d’Ivoire's special adviser, President Houphouet. There are many positive aspects to this book. What I really loved and admired was Dr. Berrah’s courage and determination to succeed. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon, but he struggled to attain great heights in life. I enjoyed the story of the book as the author gave full details of events in the course of his life’s journey. The author's use of different viewpoints to examine major political events, including the Cold War, was very appealing to me. I love Dr. Berrah's personality. Berrah's approach to attaining peace is another thing I really admire. He believes peace is meant to be achieved through peaceful dialogue. According to Dr. Berrah, "peace starts with everyone of us; it shouldn't be a dream." I also like how he is open-minded about all religions. Being a Muslim didn’t make him biased in his decisions. Although his love life wasn’t perfect, I’m glad he was able to achieve a lot.
The book was a bit lengthy, but notwithstanding, I enjoyed reading it. The only thing I felt uncomfortable with in the book was that he suffered from racism and discrimination. The same racism and discrimination that the author fought against are still prevalent in the world today. I discovered a lot of things in the book. I learned a lot about Algeria's history and their struggle for independence.
I rate the book five out of five stars. It deserves a perfect rating because of its positive aspects. There were no errors in the book because it was exceptionally well edited. I recommend the book to political activists and those who want to learn about how Algeria gained its independence. They would have a wonderful experience reading the book and have a lot to learn from it.
