Review of Purpose
Purpose by Gina Bianchini, the CEO and founder of Mighty Networks and creator of a strategy framework for developing digital communities, shares a practical guide to take your purpose and future aspirations into practice in thirty days. As Gina describes, a purpose is dynamic and doesn’t need to be about a single thing; your purpose should change as you evolve and your priorities shift. By taking the time to understand yourself in a routine she calls your “Purpose 30” you can analyze and celebrate your past to define a positive intention and purpose for your future. Gina also discusses how you can leverage your purpose to build a community and help others achieve their future aspirations.
Gina does a great job bringing in real-life examples to explain how your defined purpose can be impactful, especially if you leverage a community to amplify your message. Ultimately the Purpose isn’t about changing your life overnight; it’s about recognizing the value of your time and energy then understanding how your passions can impact others. I loved the practical tips of using technology to find your purpose and leveraging it in a positive way to build communities aligned with your aspirations for the future.
Reasonably Gina advocated for her strategy framework and the benefits of building a true supportive digital community; however often it felt like Gina was stating that was the only reasonable strategy to leverage in order for you to be fulfilled. It would have been helpful to receive some additional tips and strategies along with this recommendation, so the advice feels less biased.
I rated this book 3 out of 5 stars as it was well edited for clarity. While it was helpful to learn more about Gina’s upbringing in order to gain a greater understanding of her purpose and passion, at times I felt like I was getting a history lesson on the evolution of technology and social networking. Additionally, as described in the paragraph above, I wish Gina’s advice in finding one’s purpose encompassed more than the strategy she designed within her company to create more relatable content.
The ideal reader for this book is someone who would be seeking community and trying to understand how connection can be empowering. This book is for someone looking to discover their purpose, their intention or “why” and then leverage that purpose to connect with allies in their community. Ideally this reader has a passion for technology and needs practical tips on how to create clarity and intention while engaging with a digital community.
