Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by His Excellency Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an account of his experiences as an advocate for peace and change in Africa. This book gives us an insight into the roles he played in colonised Algeria, Morocco, the world of science, and Côte d'Ivoire. In the memoir, Dr. Berrah talks about his education, the start of his political career, his contributions, and the relationships he formed over time. He also shines focus on his close relationship with President Houphouët, who was like a father to him.
Fighting for one's country is an endeavour that needs sacrifices. Making these sacrifices is not always easy, and it is worth acknowledging those who can give themselves to this cause. Dr. Berrah was so involved in the fight for the independence of Algeria that he was arrested in the early years of his life. After his release, he stayed in Morocco and put his medical skills to use in neglected communities. Dr. Berrah's relationship with President Houphouët was an interesting one to read. I respected their way of thinking and their approach to the matters of Côte d'Ivoire. The president's use of dialogue as a diplomatic tool was powerful, and the like-mindedness of both himself and Dr. Berrah goes to show the power of joint forces with great mindsets. The impact they made over the years proves this some more.
Dr. Berrah's respect for different religions stood out for me in his memoir. He believed that it was okay to respect others' doctrines without trying to impose your ways on them. These are traits he shared with his wife, Titi, and President Houphouët. Dr. Berrah was a Muslim and Titi was a Catholic but they respected each other's religion, and religion was not a point of contention for them. I respected this view. It was another way he believed would foster peace, and he was right. His view on the subject of religion promoted the cordial relationship between people of different religions with whom he was acquainted. A notable occasion was the presence of the imams of Côte d'Ivoire at the consecration of the basilica built by President Houphouët.
Memoirs include a depth of detail that could appear a bit much to the reader but irrespective, I did not encounter any negative aspects of this book. For the most part, I enjoyed the accounts of historical events, political events, and unique visitations and meetings. I gained some new information, and overall, it was a good read. The editing of this book supported its credibility excellently. It was exceptional. I also commend the process that went into the translation of this book from French to English. It makes the editing and proofreading much more impressive. Dr. Berrah's wife, Titi, mentioned the effort that went into ensuring the nuanced expressions were transmitted in their purest form to English. The effort was not wasted; it was done so well that it was as though the book was originally written in the English language. There were no errors in this book, and the French sentences included were accurate as well.
For the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Dr. Berrah included his genuine takes on the problems most developing countries face, and mentioned what he believed would aid their development. In his memoir, he also painted a picture of the diplomatic involvement in a country's affairs; a glimpse into what it entails. Hence, I think this book would be especially appreciated by persons with deep political interests. I would recommend this book to readers who want a glimpse into the world of politics and the functions of a diplomat.
