When I was a kid, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon. A few years later, as I joined high school, I became interested in engineering and making things from scratch. I just graduated a few months ago from business school. I often tell myself that I could not have been all those things. After all, we only have so much time. Then I read of a man who defied all odds to become more than many could dream of in times few would consider convenient.

In A Dream For Peace, writer Dr. Ghoulem Berrah presents his autobiography. He is born in Algeria to a humble family. Yet, from the start, he is a brilliant young man. He goes on to become a doctor, a revered scientist, and a lawyer. Later, he becomes a trusted advisor to the Ivorian president, a role that takes up most of his adult life. Finally, and fitting for the man he is, he becomes a diplomat with significant contributions toward achieving world peace.

I loved the author's honest portrayal of his life. Focusing on the peaks of his life would have been easy. However, the author sheds light on his less spectacular formative years. He pays attention to his struggles the same way he does to his successes. He also acknowledges the influence the people he has encountered have had on him. We often forget that everyone is a product of numerous people in their lives. After all, as great as we all can become, we are also sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, and colleagues. The author notes how his mother, father, wife, and friend, the Ivorian president, have shaped the man he has become.

The author is the embodiment of a kind spirit. Having been raised under and fallen victim to the cruel hand of colonialism, one would expect him to hold a grudge against his country's oppressor. Yet, even as he and his colleagues pursue their country's independence, he does not advocate for violence. Reasonably, his most personal achievement is his work bringing peace to the world. There is no more remarkable legacy than living for something greater than oneself. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's story inspires the reader to commit to living a peaceful life. It is also worth noting that the book contains pictures of significant events in the author's life that bring us closer to the story.

After a rather refreshing and enlightening read, I could not find anything negative about the book. Besides, the book has been exceptionally edited. I am thus inclined to award it a rating of five out of five stars.

I doubt that you will read a more elevating life story. Moreover, I highly recommend this book to lovers of autobiographies and those who believe we can achieve a peaceful world. Let us not let the author's dream die.
