Review of Relish Your Retirement
Relish Your Retirement: 501 Fun, Insightful and Simple Ideas to a Blissful Retired Life for Women by Florance Philip is a refreshing take on the often daunting life transition to retirement. While retirement is inevitable for many, if not most, Americans, it can be scary to find yourself suddenly without the familiar boundaries of the work day. In this book, author Florance Philip gently leads us through a series of stories and activities to help us search our souls, discover aspects of our personalities we might have forgotten about, and explore the myriad ways we can make our retirement years the best they can be.
The sheer number of suggestions Florance provides for the retired or soon-to-be retired is staggering. Activities range in intensity, from "Get a Manicure" and "Bake Different Types of Bread," to "List Your Regrets and Resolve Them," "Consider Consulting," and "Go Back to School." Florance peppers her list with stories of the retired or those recently retired, as well as printable activity worksheets to help you organize your ideas. I especially enjoyed Florance’s research into the ways the different activities can enhance our lives emotionally, physically, and spiritually. There are also several motivating and poignant quotes sprinkled throughout the book which serve to uplift and inspire the reader. Who knew that retirement could be so rich and full?
While many of the proposals and projects overlap in terms of subject and basic content, they are still fairly unique ideas and will give the reader plenty to ponder. Florance's tone is upbeat and cheery, and although her book might tend to appeal to the more traditional upper-middle-class retiree, there are many ideas that could extend to a wider variety of individual personalities and backgrounds. In addition, while the title mentions women, the book could appeal to other genders as well.
My rating for Relish Your Retirement is 5 out of 5 stars. As I am nearing retirement myself, this book felt relevant to my situation, and allowed me to think more thoroughly about what I want my life to look like in the near future. The writing is straightforward. The chapters and lists are organized and easy to understand, while leaving room for personal reflection and expansion of ideas.
This book will be appropriate for women in any stage of adult life as they contemplate their wants and needs during their retirement, whether they're just starting out in their careers or are already living their golden years!
