In the book A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, the reader is taken on a journey through the life of a man fighting for the independence of his homeland, Algeria. The author draws from his own experiences as a Muslim growing up during the French colonization of Algeria and the loss of his father and mother. Despite coming from humble beginnings, Berrah's family emphasized education, and he was able to secure a scholarship to study in France. This opportunity allowed him to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become an activist, working alongside President Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast to better the lives of its people. Berrah's unwavering stance against segregation and discrimination is highlighted by his inter-faith marriage to a Christian woman. Throughout his journey, Berrah expands his activism to other African nations such as Morocco and Cote d'Ivoire and collaborates with influential individuals to bring about positive change.

There are many positive aspects to this book. The author's writing style was direct and simple, effectively conveying his message without any ambiguity. Ghoulem was not afraid to express his convictions, no matter how controversial they might be. I have great admiration for his journey from a youthful protest organizer to a seasoned statesman, crafting policies at the highest level and advocating for peaceful dialogue as the key to resolving conflicts. Ghoulem viewed life as a continuous quest for meaning and fulfillment, and he believed that the best way to achieve this was by serving others. This selfless motivation was evident in all aspects of his behavior and interactions.

Another thing I admired about the book was the author's unique relationship with prominent African leaders, which allowed him unprecedented access to political events, making his insights into well-known historical issues truly invaluable. I also enjoyed the way he transported the reader to each country or state he visited through his vivid descriptions of the surroundings and the people. For example, his accounts of street life in the Ivory Coast and the elaborate games in Algeria, along with the addition of photographs throughout the book, brought the characters and settings to life for me, making the story feel more tangible. Also, the language used in the book is engaging and easy to follow, making it a pleasure to read.

I was thoroughly captivated by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's A Dream For Peace. The professionalism of the editing was evident, with only a minor error that did not impact my reading experience in the slightest. I was struck by the author's straightforward manner of conveying his beliefs and ideas, which made for a highly impactful read.

For these reasons, I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would highly suggest it to anyone fascinated by the political history of Africa, as well as those interested in examining themes such as colonialism, revolution, memoir writing, and racism in African societies.
