Review of Ku-Pok's Morning Calm
Ku-Pok’s Morning Calm by Dr. David Maloney is a historical book that gives an insight into the concepts of war, military rule, friendship, love, and so much more. It is a book that contains different political aspects and focuses more on the history of South and North Korea.
The story is about an American military captain designated to fight alongside South Koreans against North Koreans. Both nations failed to embrace peace; it was the job of the captain's team and the joint forces to hold the demilitarized zone daily. As a result, the people of South Korea were under military rule and could not enjoy the dividends of democracy. It was in the aftermath of war and civil unrest that the American Air Force Captain found love with an ex-South Korean sergeant. Ever wondered what finding love in a war zone would be like?
Ku-Pok's Morning Calm by Dr. David Maloney is a book where the author interestingly captures the military dialogue, inspections, alerts, and actions taken when a soldier has an accident with a Korean civilian, thereby bringing to life a well-detailed military culture. It not only describes the military aspect; it also focuses on the life and customs of the people of South Korea. The author included interesting parts and areas of Korea, such as the traditional dances and Asian values and customs, creating an intriguing story. While South Koreans seek democracy, North Korean officials amplify their weapons of warfare. While civilians farmed and went about their daily lives, military men patrolled. Parts of the book were narrated from the North Korean point of view. Via the characters' thoughts, actions, and the author's alluring words, one can effortlessly understand how events came to play.
Although the flow of the book had errors, I could still understand the storyline. It was interesting to know about the history of both the South and North Korean wars and things related to them. I did find the chapters too long, and I just couldn’t place the unrealistically good English used by the military.
The book was professionally well edited; I did find a few errors, and I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars for how long the book is and how difficult it is to understand the military terms.
I recommend this memoir to historians, veterans, people who are interested in military-related activities, and the great people of North and South Korea. Because the book talked extensively about military-related activities and history, anyone interested in the military aspect would enjoy it.
