Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is an autobiography written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. It is a very detailed and insightful account of his life as a political activist and distinguished diplomat. He was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the province of Constantine, Algeria. Ghoulem became an activist as a result of the constant racism that was prevalent during that time. He was involved in the formation of different activist groups like the General Union of Algerian Muslim Students (UGEMA), Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), Association of North African Muslim Students (AEMNA), and many others. He was also interested in science. This leads him into pursuing medicine as opposed to teaching which Fodil, his step-brother, advised.
The book details the life history of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah and the role he played in Algeria's independence. The reader is able to gain knowledge in events that are now historical, and behind-the-scene information are revealed. While teaching at the Yale School of Medicine, he constantly felt a void in his life and decided that he was not making as much impact. This motivated him to move to Africa; Côte d'Ivoire, where he served as a special advisor to Félix Houphout-Boigny, Côte d'Ivoire's first president.
I must state that the book is a very lengthy read, but I would not expect less. The book covers the entire journey of the author from boyhood to everything he accomplished during his lifetime. All these could not have been told in details in only a few pages. I particularly admired the bond Ghoulem and his mother shared. It was so deep that she even felt it when Ghoulem had a small accident with a motorbike in school. She was also very intentional about his upbringing.
Ghoulem is meticulous with details. I couldn't keep up with the many characters that were introduced in the book. However, this is not a complaint; we cannot control the number of people we meet during our lifetime. There is nothing I disliked about the book. I truly admire Ghoulem's courage and fierceness. He was indeed a hero. I applaud the structure of this book. It is very easy to assimilate. I found just one error in the entire 632 pages of this book. This shows that it was professionally edited.
Finally, I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars for the precise way the author told his story and communicated his thoughts. I recommend this book to people who enjoy politics and history. Audiences interested in racism and colonialism should also give this book a read.
