Review of A Dream For Peace
<i>"A Dream for Peace"</i> is an autobiography that recounts Dr Ghoulem Berrah's personal experiences and journey in the pursuit of freedom and independence for Algeria. He was born in a French colony, where the influence of French culture, language, and religion was prevalent. Despite the discrimination faced by Algerians during that time, Berrah received a scholarship to attend any university of his choice after finishing elementary school, and he ultimately chose to study medicine at the University of Bordeaux. While at the University, Berrah formed the North African Muslim Students Association with a group of fellow Algerians who were also subject to discrimination. The association aimed to raise awareness about the plight of the Algerian people under French rule and to mobilize for their liberation. During his time at the University of Bordeaux, Ghoulem Berrah's life became busy as he balances his studies with political activism for the liberation of Algeria. His efforts gain traction, and he forms groups dedicated to the independence of Algeria. Ghoulem's activism leads to the police chasing him and calling him the perpetrator of the strike. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a catholic woman named Antoinette, they run away and get arrested for crossing the border without documents. After being released, Ghoulem joins a group of resistance fighters and trains with them at a camp. This marks the start of his main journey, and he eventually becomes a doctor and travels extensively. He eventually rises to the position of special counselor to President Houphouet-Boigny.
The author's love for his fellow freedom fighters is evident throughout the book. Ghoulem's close bond with his fellow brothers is one of the things that makes the book special. Ghoulem never felt alone in his fight, as his brothers always provided support for him, even when he was arrested by the police. Ghoulem Berrah's marriage to Antoinette, a catholic woman despite being a Muslim, is a great example of love against discrimination based on faith. The book is also filled with historical context, Ghoulem Berrah's memoir is a firsthand account of the history of the Algerian people, the struggles they faced, and the sacrifices they made. The epilogue, where the author discusses the importance of peace in Africa, is inspiring and motivating. Additionally, the inclusion of pictures in the book is also noteworthy, they not only enhance the reading experience but also provide proof of the author's story. The language used is straightforward, making it easy to comprehend, and the context of most French words is provided. Editing seems professional. I couldn't find a negative point.
In conclusion, "A Dream for Peace" is an impressive and thought-provoking memoir that recounts Dr Ghoulem Berrah's real-life experiences as he struggled for Algeria's freedom and independence. The book is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love, friendship, and unity. <b>I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars</b>. This work is a must-read for people interested in understanding the history of the country, the impact of colonialism, the fight for independence, and the importance of peace.
