A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an autobiography of the author’s life. He was born in Algeria in 1938. He undertook his primary and secondary education in his home country. Dr. Berrah was a bright student who always scored high grades. As such, he got a scholarship and traveled to France to pursue higher studies in the medical field. It is here in France that he became aware of the plight of Africans. Challenges such as racism and discrimination were rampant in Europe. It was worse still that those were colonial times, and Africans in Africa were embroiled in a battle for their independence. As a result, he found himself engaging in political activities.

What follows in the book is the bulk of his life’s work. After earning his doctorate and a lecturing job in the US, he chose to leave it all behind and return to Africa, heeding President Houphouet-Boigny’s call to be his special advisor. Interestingly, they shared a lot of common goals. The greatest was the desire for global peace, which they successfully pursued for over thirty years of camaraderie. The book also addresses other spheres of Dr. Berrah’s life, among them, love, relationships, and religion.

There are a lot of things that I like about the book. First and foremost, the story is nothing short of great and inspiring. It was beautiful to read about the author, who dedicated most of his life to fighting for global peace and the greater good of humanity, and not just focusing on advancing his personal agendas. I believe the world needs more people like him, especially in these tumultuous times. Secondly, I appreciate the author’s passion and uprightness in everything he did. These qualities ensured that he remained grounded in his cause without distraction or corruption, and achieved success in his diplomatic missions and other endeavors. Another thing I enjoyed in the book is the provision of pictures to accompany certain characters and events in the book.

There was not a single thing to dislike about the book. On top of the story being inspiring, everything was clear and could be easily understood. I also did not find any errors in the book. It was exceptionally well-edited.

I rate this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars. The story was quite captivating, and I was always eager to know what Dr. Berrah did next. In conclusion, he is nothing but a great man. I would recommend this book to diplomats, people dealing with peace and conflict resolution, politicians, and arbitrators.
