Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All is a non-fiction book written by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes. It consists of nine chapters that highlight the power of love which the author explores through the lenses of philosophy, self-help, and spirituality. The book opens with a quote from Ram Dass, a letter from the author, and an opening question before beginning with the first chapter and introduction to the book. The author explores not just love, but also truth with the intent of showing that there is, in fact, unity between all people regardless of politics or personal choices with the simple plea to the reader to give the author, and in turn, the book both time and the open mind in which to become united in how each person’s “true self” is the same in that it transcends space and time. The author shares how the “true self” is in fact the true origin of love which is the thing that unites all people regardless of background, politics, choices, or interests.
There is a lot to be inspired by in this book. The author uses language designed to interest, teach, and at times bring humor without coercing his opinions onto others. Instead, each chapter is built to flow easily into the next with how one chapter presents a principle upon which the next chapter is based. This blending makes it easy to switch from one chapter to the next without feeling a jarring shift of topics. The honesty that the author offers in both his opinions and arguments is very engaging. I quite enjoyed the way the author led me to understand his approach to the “true self” and what it means for humanity in general and me as an individual.
While I personally found In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All to be more worthy of praise than censure, there were a few aspects of the book that I struggled with. The quote from Ram Dass was rather confusing in that Dass claims to use words but then goes on to say that listening to his words is a mistake. While there were quotes throughout the book that added to the book in a positive manner there were also ones like Dass’ that left me confused. The use of bits of mythology also required a bit of outside research for me to understand the point the author was trying to make using the mythology.
While there were a few aspects of the book that caused me some confusion I have to say that the positive elements far outweighed them. This led me to decide to rate In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes with 5 out of 5 stars. I found personally found Hughes’ concept of “true self” and unity to be both interesting and inspiring leading me to believe that there is quite a bit to learn from both this author and this book. I was left very satisfied and could not rate the book any lower.
I recommend In It Together to a mixed audience of young adults and adults looking to better their understanding of themself and others as well as those looking to obtain a sense of inner peace.
