Review of A Dream For Peace
Ghoulem Berrah was born in the Algerian town of Ain Beida. He acquired his elementary education in Algeria before traveling to France to pursue a course in medicine at one of Bordeaux’s universities. In France, Ghoulem soon got involved in activism, becoming a leader of various student activist groups. As a student activist, he travelled to Vietnam, then to China, where he met Chairman Mao Zedong. Ghoulem’s involvement in organizing strikes in France led to his arrest. Released after interrogation by the French police, he fled from France and headed to Spain to evade the authorities. However, since Berrah and his fellow immigrants did not possess the proper documentation, they were arrested and imprisoned in Spain. He spent several months in solitary confinement before being freed and taken to Morocco after the intervention of one of the local heads of the Spanish military.
Berrah served as a physician in Morocco before a Fulbright Scholarship opportunity presented itself, an opportunity he didn't squander. In the United States of America, Berrah pursued a degree in medicine at the Indiana University. He was an exceptional student, and his stellar performance saw him become a professor at Yale University after he made a scientific discovery concerning DNA. Despite all the success in the field of medicine, there was an innate desire in Berrah to pursue 'a higher calling.’ Dr. Berrah always had a dream to serve his birth country, but when Algeria gained independence, the policies of the first Algerian self-rule government did not align with his ideals, so he held back. Fortunately, a friend of his introduced him to Felix Houphouet-Boigny, the then-president of Cote d'Ivoire. When the Ivorian president asked him to be his special advisor, Dr. Berrah happily accepted the offer, leaving his professorial career. This position took Dr. Ghoulem on a worldwide peace tour, his mission being to help discordant sides to unite at the table to solve their differences. Some of the peace deals he mediated included the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the border conflict between Algeria and Morocco, and the conflict between Angola’s first self-rule government and its opposition. The best thing about this book is that it's inspirational. Dr. Berrah pursued a noble cause, an undertaking that prevented the loss of many lives around the world. He dropped a prestigious career in medicine to pursue peace and liberation for people who were still under the chains of colonialism. This is a wonderful thing. I loved his relentless determination to seek peace for all. I also applaud the harmonious relationship and cooperation between the Christians and Muslims who worked hand-in-hand to construct a cathedral and a mosque in the city of Abidjan. This, coupled with Dr. Berrah’s harmonious marriage with his wife, emphasizes the importance of peaceful coexistence among societal members of diverse cultures and religions.
Dr. Berrah’s integrity also deserves commendation. He did not accept a 'common’ bribe from Cote d'Ivoire’s Minister of Agriculture when he helped the country recoup several millions of dollars from an initially overpriced coffee transaction with Algeria. His loyalty earned him respect and admiration, and this led to him saving President Felix Houphouet from being overthrown by some malicious external forces. Despite prolonged disapproval from his wife's parents, Dr. Berrah did not give up his wish to be accepted, nor did he antagonize the parents This was delightful.
Content-wise, this book has nothing negative. However, there were several errors in relation to typing and spelling. The editing was professional. I loved the book’s content, and although there were some typos, they weren't that many. Hence, I rate A Dream For Peace 5 out of 5 stars. People of all religions will love this book, as it teaches about the importance of peaceful coexistence. I also recommend it to fans of historical fiction and nonfiction.
