Review of Phobia Relief
PHOBIA RELIEF: From Fear to Freedom by Kalliope Barlis, is a short read about how to break free from our phobias. The book is divided into two parts: one is about how to find our purpose and how to change our perspective about our fears. The other part is about turning our fears into freedom.
The brain is tricky to change when it has settled on a particular idea. I love how the author addresses this issue and its simple solution. She gives practical examples of how we can look at our fears on pages 10 and 11:
“With a fear of dogs, I say, “It’s time to unleash your fear of dogs and bark it away.”
“With a fear of heights, I say, “Let’s lower your fear of heights, get you settled, and go to new
heights.”
“With a fear of clowns, I say, “Let’s teach them how to put their makeup on, once and for all.”
The way the author presents a phobia or an issue related to it, and how to deal with it, is by telling the reader of her experiences with clients who have experienced such issues. This gives her content a more realistic feel. It does not feel like a far-fetched fantasy; the reader can relate to the author’s clients and feel like they were in the therapy session with them. I appreciate her honesty about how she feels when her clients tell her excuses about why they have phobias. It gives a wider perspective for the reader and gives a more objective view since the experience of both the client and the
therapist is laid out.
The exercises at the end of the critical chapters were a nice touch. They summarise the chapters and break them down into one-page quick formulas a reader can refer to with ease when needed. The exercises make the suggested solutions more practical guides. Lastly, I love the transcripts of the author’s sessions with her clients. The author guides the reader on how she helps the client find a way to break free from their phobia. Putting these transcripts at the end of the book is a great way to see what the author was talking about applied in real life. This leaves very little room for the reader to be confused about anything discussed.
The book is well written with no mistakes in grammar or spelling. The book is suitable for all ages as it contains no sexual or profanity language. A reader of any religious background will find this a pleasant read, as the book is neutral in that aspect. I recommend this book to readers struggling with phobias and who want to be free from them. I also recommend this book to physiology students or qualified psychologists. Because of the lack of any flaws, I give this book a 5 out of 5-star rating.
