Review of Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature, second edition
Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature, second edition by Chet Shupe is a book about humanity's path of developing language and forgetting the primal human nature. Thus the described story of mankind was divided into only two chapters - before and after discovering a language. The author explains why a modern life is not fit for people and how to find your way to happiness. The main idea presented focuses primarily on the mindset of society. People focusing their thoughts around the future and material prosperity forget about happiness in the present.
The book makes one think. It is written in a straightforward manner and seems to be an open space for reflection. While reading, the reader can analyze their daily life and think about what makes them unhappy. The book is divided into thematic chapters that touch on different spheres of life. This makes it possible to read only on a specific topic of interest.
Although the course of the book seems to be well planned, the main ideas are presented too frequently. They are interesting but reading about them repeatedly can be bothersome. It seems that the author focused on portraying a few selected aspects of civilization as badly as possible. Some might have the feeling that the author exaggerates and tries to prove that happiness is impossible to achieve in the current world.
There is also a lack of more detailed and evidence-based information. The author has made many serious claims, which he has not supported in any way with scientific knowledge. A particularly bold statement seems to be that a return to man's original nature would result in the disappearance of violence. There is no way to confirm such a thesis, especially knowing that among animals violence naturally occurs. And such bold statements should not be made only on the basis of anyone's speculation.
I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. It explores issues that people face everyday often without even thinking about it. The book is inspirational and makes the reader think about their life. But there were a number of shortcomings that significantly reduced the quality of the reading experience.
Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature is definitely a book for everyone who questions reality and the rules by which society operates. The book presents an innovative and interesting view of modern times. However, it should be kept in mind that it is not based on scientific knowledge.
